Why Your Bathroom Heater Needs Explosion-Proof Quartz
Putting an infrared heater in a bathroom or an outdoor shower sounds simple, but it’s actually a bit of a nightmare for the hardware. You’ve got two big enemies: steam and sudden temperature drops. Most standard heating lamps just can’t hack it. They burn out or break way too fast. That’s why we stick with IP66 enclosures and explosion-proof quartz tubes. It’s about stopping the disaster before it happens.
The deal with “Explosion-Proof” Quartz
Think about this: you’ve got a heating element glowing at 500°C, and suddenly, a cold drop of water hits it. In a normal glass tube, that’s a recipe for a crack. It’s just physics. We use explosion-proof quartz because it doesn’t freak out when the temperature swings wildly. It stays solid. More importantly, it’s the last line of defense. If the outer seal fails, you still don’t want glass shards and live wires splashing around in a wet shower. This stuff keeps everything contained and safe.
Keeping the water out (IP66)
You’ll see “IP66” on the spec sheet, which basically means the housing is tight enough to keep out dust and handle a direct blast of water. But we don’t just slap a plastic cover on it and call it a day. We use heavy-duty silicone gaskets and sealed cable entries. It keeps the steam and spray away from the electrical terminals, which means you don’t have to worry about short circuits or those annoying corroded contact points that kill a heater after a few months.
A few things to keep in mind
Here’s the catch: high-density heat is great, but it creates a lot of stress on the materials. Even with a tough quartz tube, the housing around it has to be able to breathe. If you cram too many watts into a tiny box, you’ll eventually melt your seals, no matter how high your IP rating is. It’s all about balance. You’ve got to match the wattage to the airflow of the room so the whole unit doesn’t overheat. We build these things to last in the worst possible conditions. Just wire it up to a GFCI circuit for that extra peace of mind, and you’re good to go.
