
Why we’re ditching hot air for Vacuum IR in semiconductors
If you’re trying to speed up semiconductor deep processing, you’ve probably realized that waiting for a chamber to heat up is a total drag. For a long time, we relied on forced hot air. But here’s the problem: you have to heat up the entire room—the gas, the walls, everything—before the wafer actually feels the heat. It’s slow. It’s inefficient. That’s why we’ve moved toward vacuum infrared (IR) heaters. Instead of warming up the “air” around the part, IR just beams energy straight into the substrate. No middleman. It’s all about the clock. Hot air systems have this annoying thermal lag. You spend forever ramping the temperature up and then just as long waiting for it to cool back down. With IR, that lag basically vanishes. The energy hits instantly. We’re talking about cutting your cycle times from minutes down to seconds. When you’re running high-volume fab, those saved seconds add up to a massive jump in how much you can actually get done in a day. The vacuum twist Now, moving this into a vacuum changes the rules of the game. You can’t rely on air to move heat around anymore. Everything happens through radiation and conduction. We build our IR lamps to handle some serious power without blowing out the filaments. You get a really tight, precise thermal profile on the wafer, but you have to be careful. If your chamber walls aren’t shielded properly, or if your cooling jackets aren’t up to the task, that reflected heat starts creeping into your seals and sensors. It can be a headache if you don’t plan for it. The trade-off Just a heads-up: you can’t just swap a blower for a lamp and call it a day. You’ll need to tweak your PID loops. Because IR reacts so fast, it’s easy to overshoot your target temperature if your controller is still tuned for a slow air system. You’re basically trading the simplicity of a fan and some ducting for the precision of lamp arrays. It’s a shift from heating a whole volume of space to hitting a specific target with energy. It takes a bit more setup, but the speed is worth it.
