
Keeping Your Class 100 Cleanroom Actually Clean
When you’re working in a Class 100 cleanroom or a vacuum chamber, “off-gassing” is your worst enemy. Most standard heating elements are a nightmare in these environments. As they heat up, they start leaking volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or shedding tiny particles. If you’re working with wafers or high-purity optical coatings, that’s a disaster. One microscopic speck and your whole batch is trash. We tackle this by using high-purity synthetic quartz infrared lamps. They’re built specifically for vacuums, so you don’t have to worry about contamination ruining your day.
Why we stick with high-purity quartz
We use fused silica with almost zero impurities. The goal here is to stop particle shedding before it starts. Unlike your typical glass, this stuff doesn’t break down or leak gases when things get hot. Plus, these lamps use short-wave infrared radiation. This means the energy goes straight into the workpiece. It doesn’t waste time heating up the rest of the vacuum environment, which keeps your heat zone tight and controlled.
The tricky part: Vacuum seals
Here is the thing: the seal between the lamp and the vacuum flange is usually where things go wrong. It’s the primary failure point. That’s why we don’t mess around with the connectors. We use specialized electrodes and seals that can actually handle a high vacuum. You can’t just grab a random connector off the shelf. The materials have to survive being heated and cooled over and over again without cracking or spitting out particulates. We can tune the wattage and voltage to fit your specific chamber size. Just keep in mind that while higher wattage gives you more heat density, you’ll need to make sure your vacuum pumps can keep up. You don’t want your chamber walls overheating.
A few warnings (The “don’t do this” list)
High-purity quartz is amazing, but it’s brittle. It can handle extreme heat, but it hates being bumped. If you drop a lamp or get too aggressive with the mounting clips, you’ll get a stress fracture. And in a vacuum, a tiny crack means an immediate loss of pressure. One last tip:always wear gloves. It sounds simple, but skin oils leave marks on the quartz. Those marks create “hot spots” when the lamp turns on, and those hot spots are exactly what cause the tube to burn out way too early. Handle them with care, and they’ll last.
