
Keeping Your Ozone-Free IR Lamps From Blowing a Fuse
Ozone-free infrared lamps are great because they cut out that 185nm emission line. That means no O3 buildup, which is a huge win for the people operating the machines and the materials you’re working with. But here’s the thing: the heating element is only half the battle. When you’re dealing with high-wattage industrial tubes, the real nightmare isn’t the heat—it’s electrical leakage and insulation failure.
Why we obsess over insulation testing
We don’t do “random sample checks.” That’s a recipe for disaster. Instead, every single lamp that leaves our floor goes through a full voltage withstand and insulation resistance test. We basically stress-test the quartz envelope and the electrode seals with high voltage. Why? Because we’re looking for the tiny stuff—micro-cracks or impurities in the glass that you can’t see with the naked eye. If the insulation fails, you get arcing. And in a high-density heating array, one leaky tube can trip your entire control cabinet. Or, in a worst-case scenario, it can energize the machine frame. That’s not a risk we’re willing to take. We push our tests way past standard operating voltages so these lamps can handle a nasty voltage spike without shorting out.
The tricky part: Engineering trade-offs
Getting tight tolerances on insulation is a must, but you’ve got to balance that with the actual size of your connectors. Whether you’re using R7s or Sk15 pins, the spot where the lead wire meets the quartz is always the weakest link. Our tests make sure that seal stays airtight and electrically isolated, even when things start expanding under intense heat. Speaking of heat—these lamps run hot. Really hot. You have to make sure your wiring and contactors can actually handle the current draw. And keep an eye on your cooling fans. If those fail, the ambient heat will eat through the insulation on your surrounding wires, no matter how well the lamp itself was built.
